Microchipping is crucial for pet safety, ensuring a higher chance of reunion if they ever get lost.
It is a sad fact that hundreds of dogs go missing every year. Most of these dogs end up in animal shelters, where the staff try desperately to locate their owners. With no form of identification, this can be extremely difficult. These dogs may end up being adopted out to new owners or worst-case scenario, euthanized, due to overcrowding or health issues. Even if they went missing with collars and tags on, these can easily break off and leave your dog with no identification whatsoever!! This is where microchips come in.
It is a good idea to have your dog microchipped, to ensure a higher rate of return, if he/she goes missing. It is a permanent piece of ID and can be easily traced, unlike tattoos, which sometimes fade with age.
Microchips are injected into your dog, usually under the skin, at the back of the neck. Even though the needle is large, many pets don’t even flinch when the chip is inserted. The chip itself is encased in a small glass cylinder, the size of a grain of rice and it contains a radio transmitter and a tiny electronic device containing the animal’s ID number. The chip usually lasts the lifetime of your dog but can sometimes migrate from its original position. If your dog is ever lost and is brought into a shelter, pound or vet clinic, he or she will be scanned using a special scanner. If your dog is microchipped, their ID number will be displayed on the scanner and can be traced through the microchip database. As long as the information is up to date, you will receive a phone call, and you and your dog will be reunited.
