How does microchipping work and is it safe for my dog?

Microchips are injected into your dog, usually under the skin, at the back of the neck. Even though the needle is large, many pets don’t even flinch when the chip is inserted. The chip itself is encased in a small glass cylinder, the size of a grain of rice and it contains a radio transmitter and a tiny electronic device containing the animal’s ID number. The chip usually lasts the lifetime of your dog but can sometimes migrate from its original position. If your dog is ever lost and is brought into a shelter, pound or vet clinic, he or she will be scanned using a special scanner. If your dog is microchipped, their ID number will be displayed on the scanner and can be traced through the microchip database. As long as the information is up to date, you will receive a phone call, and you and your dog will be reunited.
